Should You Use a Yacht Broker to Sell Your Boat? Broker vs. For-Sale-By-Owner

When it’s time to sell your boat, one of the first decisions is how: list it yourself and save on commission, or hire a yacht broker to handle it. Both paths sell boats, and the right choice depends on your boat, your time, and your comfort with the process. Here’s an honest look at broker vs. for-sale-by-owner (FSBO) — including where each genuinely makes sense.

The Case for Selling It Yourself (FSBO)

Let’s start with the honest upside of going it alone, because for some sellers FSBO is a reasonable choice:

  • No commission. The obvious draw — you don’t pay a broker’s fee, so more of the sale price stays with you (in theory; more on that below).
  • Full control. You set the price, field the inquiries, and negotiate directly.
  • Can work well for smaller, simpler boats. For a lower-value boat with a straightforward sale and a local buyer, the DIY route is very doable.

If you have the time, the patience, and a simple, inexpensive boat, selling it yourself can absolutely make sense.

The Hidden Costs and Hassles of FSBO

The catch is that “saving the commission” isn’t the whole equation. Selling a boat yourself means personally handling:

  • Pricing it right — without market data, FSBO sellers frequently overprice (and it sits) or underprice (and lose more than a commission), which is the most common selling mistake.
  • Marketing and exposure — reaching serious buyers beyond a single listing site is harder than it looks.
  • Fielding every call, tire-kicker, and showing — including no-shows and unqualified buyers.
  • Vetting buyers and coordinating survey and sea trial.
  • The paperwork — title transfer, documentation, bill of sale, and (for some boats) US import duty and closing details.
  • Escrow and payment security — safely handling large sums and protecting yourself in the transaction.

None of it is impossible — but it’s a real job, and mistakes can cost you far more than a commission.

What a Yacht Broker Actually Does

A good broker isn’t just “posting your listing for a fee.” They manage the entire sale end to end:

  • Accurate, market-based pricing using real comparable sales — see how boats are valued — so you sell faster and net more.
  • Professional marketing and reach that puts your boat in front of serious, qualified buyers, not just casual browsers.
  • Screening buyers so you’re not wasting time on tire-kickers.
  • Handling showings, negotiations, survey, and sea trial on your behalf.
  • Managing the paperwork and closing — title, documentation, escrow, and funds — securely and correctly.
  • Guiding pricing strategy if the market shifts, so the boat doesn’t go stale.

In short, the broker absorbs the time, expertise, and risk that FSBO sellers take on themselves.

The Commission Question: Do You Actually Net More?

This is the heart of the decision. Yes, a broker charges a commission — but the real question isn’t “commission or no commission,” it’s what you net at the end. A broker who prices your boat correctly, markets it to more qualified buyers, and prevents costly mistakes frequently nets the seller more — even after the fee — than a mispriced, under-marketed FSBO sale would have. Add the value of your time and the risk avoided, and the math often favors the broker, especially on larger, higher-value, or more complex boats.

So Which Should You Choose?

A simple way to decide:

  • FSBO may fit if: your boat is smaller and lower in value, the sale is simple, you have ample time, and you’re comfortable with pricing, marketing, paperwork, and payment security.
  • A broker makes sense if: your boat is higher-value or complex (larger cruisers and catamarans especially), you want maximum exposure to serious buyers, you’d rather not manage the process, or you simply want to net the most with the least hassle and risk.

For most owners of significant boats, the broker’s expertise pays for itself. You’ll find more selling questions answered on our FAQ page.
