Winterizing Your Boat in Maryland: A Complete Checklist

Maryland winters are hard on boats. Freezing temperatures can crack engine blocks, burst plumbing, and damage systems left unprotected — turning a season of neglect into thousands of dollars of spring repairs. Winterizing your boat properly is the single best thing you can do to protect your investment through the cold months. Here’s a complete checklist for Chesapeake boat owners, plus how to get it done right.

Every boat is different, so treat this as a general guide — always follow your engine and equipment manuals, and when in doubt, have a professional handle it.

When to Winterize on the Chesapeake

Timing matters. You want to winterize after your last outing of the season but before the first hard freeze — typically mid- to late fall in Maryland. Waiting too long is a gamble; a single unexpected freeze can do the damage you were trying to prevent. Late October into November is the sweet spot for most Chesapeake owners.

Engine and Fuel System

The engine is the most expensive thing to get wrong, so it’s the heart of any winterization:

  • Change the oil and filter before storage, since used oil contains contaminants that can corrode over the winter.
  • Flush the cooling system and add antifreeze rated for marine use to protect against freezing.
  • Stabilize the fuel and top off the tank to reduce condensation and prevent moisture buildup.
  • Fog the engine (per your manual) to coat internal parts and guard against corrosion.
  • Address saildrives, outdrives, and gear oil as your engine type requires.

Freshwater and Plumbing Systems

Anything that holds water can freeze and crack:

  • Drain the freshwater tank, water heater, and lines.
  • Run non-toxic antifreeze through the plumbing, including faucets, showers, and the head system.
  • Empty and treat the holding tank.
  • Don’t forget the washdown pumps, bilge pump, and any AC/refrigeration with water circuits.

Batteries and Electrical

  • Fully charge the batteries, and consider removing them for storage in a cool, dry place, or keep them on a maintainer.
  • Disconnect and clean terminals to prevent slow drain and corrosion.
  • Turn off and protect electronics, and check that shore-power connections are sound if the boat stays plugged in.

Interior: Fight Moisture and Mold

A closed-up boat is a breeding ground for mildew over a damp Chesapeake winter:

  • Remove anything that holds moisture — cushions, linens, life jackets, food, and gear — or lift and prop cushions for airflow.
  • Clean thoroughly so nothing organic is left to grow.
  • Add moisture absorbers or a dehumidifier, and create ventilation where you can.
  • Leave lockers and the fridge propped open.

Exterior, Canvas, and Deck

  • Wash and wax the hull to protect the finish through winter.
  • Clean, dry, and store canvas and sails so they don’t mildew; remove or protect the dodger and bimini.
  • Clear scuppers and drains so melting snow and ice can escape rather than pool and freeze.

Haul-Out, Storage, and Shrink-Wrap

One of the biggest decisions is where and how the boat spends the winter:

  • On the hard (land storage): hauling out gets the boat fully out of the water and lets you inspect and service the bottom, running gear, and through-hulls.
  • In-water storage: possible on the Bay, but requires extra attention to bubblers, bilge monitoring, and freeze protection.
  • Shrink-wrap or a fitted cover: protects against snow, ice, and UV — just make sure it’s vented to prevent trapped moisture and mold.

Our on-site partner Pier 7 Marina offers both secure in-water slips and land storage right on the South River, making the haul-out-and-store step simple.

Do It Yourself, or Have It Done Right

Winterizing can be a rewarding DIY project — but it’s detailed, and a single missed step (an undrained line, skipped antifreeze) can mean expensive spring damage. For many owners, having professionals handle it is cheap insurance and peace of mind.

That’s where our on-site team comes in. Annapolis Yacht Services provides complete winterization — engine preparation, antifreeze application, and full system preservation — right here in Edgewater. As the only local service center capable of hauling and launching cruising catamarans up to 60 feet, they handle sail, power, and multihulls alike, and they’ll have your boat ready to hibernate safely.

Come Spring, We’ve Got You Too

Winterization’s companion is spring commissioning — the inspections, engine tune-ups, and system checks that get your boat back on the water worry-free. Handling both with the same trusted team means nothing falls through the cracks between seasons. You’ll find more ownership answers on our FAQ page.
