Annapolis Yacht Sales South hosted their first Beneteau Rendezvous on June 23-25 at their location in Deltaville, Virginia. The weekend kicked off with a huge storm!! Some were already safely tucked into their slips, but others were still en-route and had to endure torrential rain, lightning and winds gusting to over 50 knots!! Although one boat lost all of their electronics in a lightning strike, everyone arrived safely with lots of mutual assistance on radios and cell phones.
A superb selection of food was offered at the potluck dinner – the hardest part was deciding what to put onto your plate! Multi-talented Mike Plourde did a great job of entertaining us all, the Goombay Smash did its libationary job, friendships were renewed, first-time participants welcomed, and war stories about surviving the trip down were shared.
Saturday dawned with weather forecasts predicting more of the same rain, but someone in our group must have had a good connection with the weather-gods, because we were spared and had a perfectly fine day and night! Our sponsors, as always, were extremely generous and we were able to pass on some first class gifts. Two-session seminars (so everyone had the opportunity to attend those that they were most interested in) were arranged - engine maintenance by Deltaville Marina, winch maintenance by Ben Givens from Lewmar, rigging and splicing by Garth Hichens, and Sue Hichens shared experiences from their recent trip down to the Bahamas on a Beneteau 423. From feedback we got, it seems as though the information was really useful and much appreciated.
The Bus Stop catered a delicious build-your-own sandwich lunch with great salads and desserts. We didn’t have much enthusiasm for water sports, croquet or tug-of-war; it seems most people welcomed the opportunity for an afternoon nap after the previous day’s hectic activity. Our service team from Annapolis, Chris Humphreys, Fred Wagner and Mike Plourde were kept busy helping owners troubleshoot and fix problems on their boats – the Rendezvous is a wonderful opportunity to have them look at some of the small problems that don’t warrant a proper service call.
A lot of people must have spent the AAAARRFFternoon preparing, because at 6.00pm a band of unbelievably well dressed pirates emerged from the Beneteaus in the marina. We were bowled over by the spirit with which everyone participated in our “Pirates of the Chesapeake” theme. It was a near-to-impossible task to select winners, but more prizes were handed out and eventually Anne ran out of names to pull out of the hat – so it seems that everyone who came took something home with them. The photographs tell the story – and we will be adding more photos as people send them in. (Please send photos to jane@annapolisyachtsales.com and we will get them onto our site – if there are too many, we might create a link) The Bus Stop excelled once more with a chicken, ribs and salad dinner, followed by amazing dessert. Our DJ for the evening battled a little to find the era of music that we had hoped for, but that didn’t stop those who had come to dance the night away.
We have to thank and congratulate Anne and Jonathan Hutchings, who have only been in Deltaville for a year, for putting on an amazing weekend for our Beneteau owners. Many boats traveled all the way down from the Northern Chesapeake Bay and Annapolis for the event, and we were delighted to meet so many new faces from Virginia and the Southern Bay. We have no doubt that after this event, our numbers for this two-yearly event in Deltaville will grow and grow, and we hope that we will be able to tempt the Virginia owners to come up and join us every other year for our AYS “North” event.
